Plenty of H8 for everyone!

In the gay marriage debate currently raging in California, it is surprising how "conservatives" turn to an ancient, prejudiced, scientifically-disproved collection of religious texts which bears no relation to modern American law, justice, or culture. In media outside the confines of courtrooms, these "conservatives" (their word for themselves, not mine) employ every avenue of communication to spew their anti-equality invective. At the Reformation21 blog, Carl Trueman has this to say about the fight against gay marriage:

We can no longer assume our children will just agree with us on this issue; they are going to want arguments for holding that homosexual practice is wrong.  We need to go back to scripture and sharpen our swords, so to speak, as we can no longer assume that the cultural bias will play our tune anyway.

Score one for the cultural bias! Note that Trueman, instead of making any factually-relevant arguments against gay marriage (there are none), compels his readership to regress two thousand years into the past and use the few verses that could possibly be construed as anti-homosexual in brainwashing children to continue the cycle of anti-homosexual hatred. How sad.

The Bible is a book that people claim to be true because it claims itself to be true and that anything claiming the Bible to be wrong is itself wrong. It's impossible to confront a "believer" with the fallacy of the Bible and its tenets because they're caught in a Catch-22 that disallows them leaving the logical loop. Their mindset is one of "I'm right because the Bible says I'm right," and if you ask them why the Bible is right, they'll tell you, "because it says it's right." So, to their minds, homosexuality is wrong because the Bible says it is wrong, and there is no way to get them to change their minds without destroying their faith in an ancient book of magic desert fables.

So, what is the solution? Destroy their faith in their book of magic desert fables. It does the world no good for hundreds of millions of non-Jewish people to live their lives according to a set of doctrines that may have functioned well for a small, politically-insignificant, regionally-confined confederation of nomadic Middle-eastern desert tribes some two-thousand years ago, but it is quite colossally insufficient as a guide for life in the postmodern world. I grow reluctant to use the common BC/AD dating system, although it does adequately approximate the amount of time that has passed since humanity lost its mind.

If a person wished to reach back into the past and use an ancient text as the basis upon which to live their lives in the modern world, one would be better served using the texts of Rome than of Jerusalem. Ancient Rome bears more influence upon the modern Western world than ancient Jerusalem ever did or could. Is it Jewish law that guides our justice system? That seems to be what these "conservatives" want. Why don't we humor them a moment?

Just for a second, let's imagine that our Romano-British legal system didn't exist but was replaced by the Jewish legal system. Remember that Jesus Christ did not abolish the Mosaic/Rabbinic Law of the Old Testament. (In fact, if it were up to Jesus, we'd all be practicing Jews). You're a married woman, and you sleep with another man. The sentence for both of you: Death. You're a teenage boy who talks back to his parents. Your sentence? Death. You're playing a game of football with your friends, and you accidentally knock out your buddy's tooth. Guess what? He gets to knock out one of yours. A voice in your head tells you to put your son on an altar of fire, slay him with a knife, and burn him. You follow blindly, ignoring your son's protests: "Daddy, what are you doing to me? Daddy, why are you doing this? Ouch, Daddy, it hurts. Please stop. Why are you tying me up? Please don't light that fire, Daddy. Please don't raise that knife..." (Off topic, but I'll say it anyway: If Abraham as the "father of faith" is admirable or even the slightest bit acceptable to you, then you're an inhuman monster who doesn't deserve to have children.)

The gay marriage issue, along with every other socially-progressive issue in American history, is not so much about the godless liberals trying to build here a new Sodom as it is about thinking, rational minds working to abolish inequalities and injustices from secular society. The world's worst nightmare is the emerging, militant fundamentalism of American Christianity whose goal is nothing less than the abolition of secular government and the establishment of a worldwide Judeo-Christian theocracy.

You'll find enough H8 in a single copy of the Bible to fill the universe with darkness, yet it's the book anti-gay marriage "conservatives" use to justify their position and which they want as the only law in the United States. I'll end with the words of The Gay Manifesto:

The parents and the leaders of these terrorist christian churches should all be sitting prison. If you have a local church preaching that Gays and Lesbians should be put to death report them to the FBI terrorism tips line. Do not engage with these christian terrorists they are dangerous and should only be approached by well armed federal agents.
